LEEUWKOP GOLF CLUB
NEWSLETTER JUNE 2013
The Club Championships held over the weekend of 25-26 May were a resounding success. Pelop ensured that the event was run professionally, the course was set up excellently and the good entry led to some great rivalry.
The Men Champion was decided by a ding-dong battle between Reggie Mkhonto and Club Chairman Alpheus Mohale. Alpheus truimphed in the end by 1 shot, achieving a goal he has been pursuing since the early Nineties. In the Ladies Championship Karen Botha retained her title with n imporessive 10 shot win. New members Willie Odendaal and Amos Makhubele were also among the winners. This is an encouraging sign of the growth of Leeuwkop.

Adrian Lloyd sighted a Black Heron (also called the Black Egret) at the 7th hole dam on Wednesday 22. This bird is very rare at Leeuwkop. It has a unique way of fishing, forming an umbrella with its wings then catching the fish lured by the “safety” of the shade. Pelop and Peter Hutton sent in a photo of duck they saw at the 7th for identification. It was one of the group of 3 Yellow Billed Duck which normally hangout around the big willow on the 4th fairway.

A number of rutted pathways have been filled. The ramp pathway from the 7th tee past the slipway has been finished and the side grassed. The swampy area on the beginning of the 7th fairway has been drained. Saplings around the 7th dam have been removed allowing a clear view of the water. Trees all around the course have had bottom branches and foliage trimmed, giving a clean cut look to the course. All noxious Bug Weed bushes and Lantana have been removed around the course.... this pest plant is increasingly rampant all over the country.
